UVALDE, TEXAS

Uvalde is the geographical and trade center for a large portion of southwest Texas. The nation's two longest highways, U.S. 90 and U.S. 83 cross in downtown. The spot that in 1853 was a wagon yard and is now the town plaza.

Among other things the area is a sportsman's paradise boasting trophy whitetail deer, turkey, quail and dove for the hunters and unequaled opportunities for photography and bird watching. The Nueces, Frio and Sabinal Rivers traverse Uvalde County. These three rivers offer a host of outdoor recreational experiences including camping, hiking, tubing, bicycling, bird watching, wildlife viewing, fishing and swimming. Facilities include cabins, shelters, RV sites, primitive camp and picnic areas, country stores and miniature golf. Nestled in the Hill Country, only one hour northeast of Uvalde in the Lost Maples State natural Area, the only maple forest in Texas. One of the most popular visitor spots in the state is Garner Park. Named after former Vice President and Uvalde native John Nance Garner, the park is located on the Frio River just 30 minutes north of Uvalde on U.S. 83. Built as a U.S. Cavalry post in 1849, Fort Inge is located on the Leona River south of town and is listed in the National Registry of Historic Sites in Texas. Uvalde is home to Garner Museum, Uvalde Grand Opera House and a fine art collection located in the First State Bank. Collected by former Governor and Mrs. Dolph Briscoe, the works include Rembrandt, Gainsborough and American Western artist such as Warren and Salinas.

The economy is based on farming, ranching and light industry. Southwest Texas Junior College and Sul Ross State University, Rio Grande College make their home in Uvalde. The medical center complex is modern and growing. Garner Field a former training site for World War II pilots, now handles local air traffic and is home to several thriving businesses serving the aircraft industry.
